Mental Health First Aid

an overview of Bridgeway Center's certification course on Mental Health First Aid

Presented By:

Tina Griffith

Objectives of Mental Health First Aid:

  • To learn how MHFA can help our community.

  • To give an overview of the prevalence and the impact of mental health problems in the United States.

  • To introduce the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan and how it fits within the array of interventions available to address mental health problems.

  • To give an overview of the signs and symptoms, possible risk factors and warning signs of depression, anxiety, Psychosis (Bipolar and Schizophrenia) and Substance Use Disorders.

  • What crises are common to assess for with each illness.

  • The foundation of the course is the beliefs that people can and do recover from mental illness if they receive treatment and support.

  • What Recovery is.

The full Mental Health First Aid program is an 8-hour training certification course which teaches participants a five-step action plan to assess a situation, select and implement interventions and secure appropriate care for the individual, the certification program introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews common treatments. Thorough evaluations in randomized controlled trials and a quantitative study have proved the CPR-like program effective in improving trainees' knowledge of mental disorders, reducing stigma and increasing the amount of help provided to others. The program is in nearly twenty states and more than 40 communities nationwide and has been replicated in twenty other countries worldwide, including Hong Kong, Scotland, England, Canada, Finland, and Singapore. In February 2014 The National Council certified BCI to provide the Mental Health First Aid program. BCI and all the sites across the nation that replicate this program maintain strict fidelity to the original, proven program.
